Dr. Kariuki Njenga (Secretary)

Dr. Kariuki Njenga serves as the secretary of the Steering Committee of AfOHNet. His full-time job is as Country Director & Professor of Infectious Diseases, Washington State University Global Health Program, in Nairobi, Kenya. His research focus in the East and Central Africa region includes combating emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and antimicrobial resistance. Based full-time in Kenya, his EIDs program includes human and animal health clinicians' training on epidemiology and approaches to control zoonotic infectious diseases, developing tools for early detection and response to emerging diseases. He is currently investigating the burden and maintenance of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in its vertebrate reservoir, the dromedary camel, and camel owners in rural Northern Kenya; and teasing out factors associated with its zoonotic transmission.  Dr. Njenga is Principal Investigator of two multi-year CDC grant and director of the newly NIH-funded Emerging Infectious Disease Research Center for East and Central Africa (EIDRC-ECA). He is a member of the US National Academy of Medicine.
